The Komodo National Park is a conservation area located between Sumbawa and Flores in Eastern Indonesia. The Park consist three major islands such as Komodo, Rinca and Padar and of course several smaller islands. The total park area is 1.800 qkm and established as a national park in 1980. Komodo was further declared as a World Heritage Site in 1986 and a Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1992.

The spectacular terrestrial and marine biodiversity makes the Komodo National Park a treasure for divers and non-divers alike. The land area holds almost 250 species of plants, 30+ species of reptiles, 3 species of amphibians and provides roosting areas for more than 100 bird species.  In the waters around Komodo, recognized as one of richest marine environment on the planet, extensive mangrove stands, sea grass beds, seamounts and coral reefs shelter more than 1000 fish species and 50 species of sponges.

The colorful reefs around the Komodo National park are home to nudibranchs, sea slugs, lobsters, shrimps, crabs, frog fishes, sea horses, shells, cowries and many other unusual coastal marine species. And in addition the position of the park at a confluence of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and the numerous sheltered bays on the seventeen islands, attract 6 species of whales, 10 dolphin species as well as dungong, rays, turtles, sharks and several species of pelagic fish.
