Sri Lankan Rupee Sri Lanka's official currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee. Bank notes come in denominations of 5000, 2000, 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10 rupees, and coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 rupees.

Sri Lankan Rupee CoinsIt is not possible to obtain Sri Lankan Rupees outside Sri Lanka. Therefore, we recommend that you bring US Dollar or Euro to change in Sri Lanka Rupee at on of the bank booths at the airport, so you have some local currency on hand on your arrival.  The bank counters in the airport arrivals hall generally offer the most competitive rates and quick service. 

We do not advise to bring Traveler’s cheques, as they are rarely accepted within the country.

ATMs are readily available in the larger towns and cities and accept most major western cards.  If you are heading somewhere more remote, please make sure that you take enough cash with you. Most ATM's will charge around 3% for cash withdrawals.
